The decision to form the Department of Lexicography (which operated under the name Department of Lexicography and Bibliography until 2004) was made at a meeting of the Management Board of Matica Srpska on the 4th of November 1991. The Department coordinates the following projects: Leksikon pisaca Jugoslavije/Leksikon pisaca srpske književnosti (Lexicon of Yugoslav Writers/Lexicon of Writers of Serbian Literature), Srpski biografski rečnik (Serbian Biographical Dictionary), Srpska enciklopedija (Serbian Encyclopedia) and Edicija Bibliografije (Bibliographies Series).

The Department of Lexicography emerged from the need to unify the activities in Matica Srpska that were successfully launched in the second half of the 20th century as independent projects: Leksikon pisaca Jugoslavije (Lexicon of Yugoslav Writers), Srpski biografski rečnik (Serbian Biographical Dictionary), Srpska enciklopedija (Serbian Encyclopedia) and Edicija Bibliografije (Bibliographies Series). Academician Čedomir Popov spoke about the reasons for the founding of the Department as well as the activities planned at a meeting of the Department of Lexicography and Bibliography of the time on the 22nd of January 1992. The main task of the Department is the organization and realization of research that, in form of lexicons, biographic and encyclopedic dictionaries, and bibliographies, provide documented information about the culture of Serbian people in various periods of its history, observed separately as well as through relations with other national cultures. Furthermore, the main task of the Department includes organization of scientific conferences, public lectures and exhibitions on the projects of the Department either independently or in cooperation with the Departments of Matica Srpska or other relevant institutions. The activities of the Department incorporate scientific projects and subprojects with respective program contents.

The Department operates under the management of the Secretary General and the Board of the Department of Lexicology. Since the founding of the Department the following Secretary Generals have been appointed: Academician Čedomir Popov (1991–1995, 2004–2008), Academician Nikša Stipčević (1995–1999), Professor Predrag Piper, PhD (1999–2004), Professor Branko Bešlin PhD (2008–2012) and Professor Ljiljana Pešikan Ljuštanović, PhD since 2012.
