Jakov Ignjatović, a writer, politician, lawyer, people’s representative
(Sentandreja, 1822-Novi Sad, 1889). Actively participated in the Serbian
movement of 1848 (member of the Main Board of Vojvodina). He left his position
within the Serbian leadership, and was arrested. Following his release, he was
immediately appointed editor of Vesnik, the official newspaper of
Vojvodina. He moved to Belgrade (1849), as an assistant editor of Serbian
Newspaper. Lived in Pančevo, then in Pest (in a semi-illegal capacity, due to
his anti-Austrian views). He edited Letopis (1854–1856), during which
time he published documents from the history of

, views on the
history of the Serbian people, essays on the state of Serbian literature, and
the historical novel Đurađ Branković. He was at the center of the
Romanticist circle in Novi Sad, and at the same time the originator of Realism
in Serbian literature. He was unarguably the most prominent novelist of the
era.
