Jovan Đorđević, professor, founder of Serbian theaters (Senta, 1826– Belgrade,
1900). He was a professor at the Novi Sad High School (1852–1858), theater
worker, secretary of
and editor
of Letopis (1858–1859). He was appointed editor and secretary on
December 7th 1857, and took over duties on March 1st
1858. He published only three volumes of this renowned journal, giving it a
new direction. He was attacked for the orthography he used in his newspaper,
as well as for his progressive spirit, following which he was forced to resign
(1859). Active in youth groups (from the almanac Slavjanka, 1847) and
in the movement of 1848/1849, working with S. Miletić (Srpski Dnevnik)
on reorganizing Matica Srpska and Letopis. He was director the
in Novi Sad from 1861 to 1867. In that period, romantic drama (Đ. Jakšić, L.
Kostić) was established, realist works by J. Ignjatović, and he reacts
critically to one-sidedness of the romanticists’ lyrics. After moving to
Belgrade (in October 1868), he decisively influenced the foundation of the
(since
1870, its director of drama). He also held important government positions in
Serbia.
