Jovan Subotić, a poet, drama and prose writer, essayist, doctor of philosophy and legal sciences, lawyer (Dobrinci, Srem, 1817-Zemun, 1886). Actively participated in the movement of 1848-1849, from 1861 in the political life of Hungary as well, a member of the Croatian Parliament. He was elected president of Matica Srpska for a four-year term in 1868, and fought for this institution to resist the pressures of the Hungarian authorities. He edited the Letopis for the years 1842–1847, and 1850–1853. Also, during that time he published a large number of texts in all the journal’s sections: extensive materials from the events of 1848-1849, documents from older times, short stories, translations, polemics, critics, literary-historical reviews, studies on the verse of folk and artistic poetry, articles on folk customs. He wrote a very significant five-volume work The Life of Dr. Jovan Subotić (an autobiography), published by
(1901-1910).
