After completing his education, he returned to

, where he worked for a while as a scribe in the law office of
Jovan Subotić, and in 1859 he moved to Serbia, where he worked as a professor in Belgrade
and Kragujevac. He authored several grammar textbooks. He returned to Novi Sad
(1871) where he served as the chief school supervisor of Serbian schools in
Novi Sad, librarian and assistant secretary of
. He edited Letopis (1870-1875), advocating for the consistent
introduction and use of Vuk's orthography in all texts. He was one of the
founders of the
(1868) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Serbian
in Novi
Sad (founded in 1861). Towards the end of his life, he began to collect his
writings on the purity of language and style, but managed to publish only two
volumes out of eight planned (On the Serbian language 1-2).
